Dream therapists
"Dream therapist" is not a credential. No professional body certifies it and, as far as we know, no country protects it as a title, so anyone can use it. When you look for someone to work with your dreams, ask what they are trained and licensed as.
Who is trained to work with dreams
Dreams come up in many kinds of therapy. Some practitioners have specific training in them:
- Certified Jungian analysts. Their training, recognised by the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP), gives dreams a central place. This directory lists 1,424 analysts and analysts in training from IAAP member society rosters.
- Psychoanalysts and psychodynamic psychotherapists from other traditions, who may also work with dreams.
- Therapists who have done shorter courses in dream work. Ask what the course was, how long it lasted and who ran it.
Coaches and "dream interpreters" without a clinical qualification are not regulated as therapists in most places, so check what you are being offered.
How to find someone who works with dreams
- Find analysts near you by country or city, or analysts who work online.
- Look at the analyst's own website, linked from their profile, for how they describe their work. We do not yet record which analysts mention dream work, so this step is yours.
- Ask in your first email whether dreams are part of how they work. The questions to ask page has a template.
