How to become a Jungian analyst

Becoming a Jungian analyst takes five to eight years of part-time training in the US, according to the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, at about $15,000–20,000 a year. The C.G. Jung-Institut Zürich puts its programme at at least eight semesters and at least CHF 61,730 including analysis and supervision.

You train with an IAAP member society or institute, or, where none exists, through the IAAP's Router programme. Every route combines a long personal analysis, seminars, supervised clinical work and a final assessment.

Routes in

  1. A society's training programme, the usual route. Entry requirements differ: some ask for a master's in psychology or medicine, others accept any master's degree (see the table).
  2. The IAAP Router programme, for people with no IAAP society nearby. It requires at least 25 hours of analysis with an IAAP analyst and at least 100 hours of individual supervision on the way to Individual Membership (Router handbook).

There is no published salary data for Jungian analysts. Income depends on how many clients an analyst sees and what they charge. For comparison, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics gives a median annual pay of $99,110 for psychologists and $59,350 for mental health counselors (May 2025) (BLS, BLS). As arithmetic only: one weekly client at $200 a session for 46 weeks brings in $9,200 a year before costs.
